How Are Bricks Made? How Are Concrete Blocks Made?
Concrete blocks, also called concrete bricks, are blocks made from fired earth. They can be manufactured in several ways. Click to read more about concrete block manufacturing methods.

How Are Concrete Bricks Made?
Several techniques are used to manufacture concrete bricks.
- Industrial Techniques Industrial techniques are generally used by large concrete brick manufacturers.
Concrete brick manufacturing processes vary between producers. Hydraulic pressing is the technique most commonly used by equipment manufacturers.
Hopper: stores raw materials such as gravel and sand.
Mixer: blends mortar from water, cement and raw materials.
Hydraulic press machine: gives the product the finish defined by the mold. Capacity varies with the size of the mixer and machine.

Manual Techniques
This is an older concrete brick manufacturing method, now hardly used in Europe. It remains in use in some African and Asian countries.

Traditional Manufacturing: Cement-Stabilized Earth Blocks Cement-stabilized earth blocks offer a construction technique suited to African countries and equatorial regions, providing an ideal alternative for building in sub-Saharan Africa. - Collecting Soil, Sand or Gravel
|
To make stabilized-earth blocks, first collect the raw material, namely soil or gravel. This involves three steps:
|
- Mixing Soil or Gravel with Cement
|
Once the soil for the blocks has been collected and properly sieved, proceed to the next stage: mix the prepared soil with cement, which acts as a stabilizer. The soil-to-cement ratio depends on particle size and the soil’s chemical composition. It can range from 6 to 10 wheelbarrows of soil per bag of cement. Carry out local trials to determine the ratio best suited to your conditions, and mix thoroughly to obtain a uniform mixture. |
- Molding Mortar-Based Blocks
|
Once the soil, sand or gravel and cement are mixed uniformly, you can form the blocks: Place the soil-cement mixture into the molds and compact it to make stabilized-earth blocks. Block dimensions depend on the dimensions of the molds. |
- Drying Traditionally Made Bricks
|
After molding, the blocks are left to dry. Drying time depends on their composition. Blocks made from 100% earth take approximately 3 months to dry. Adding cement can halve this period or reduce it to 1 month. |
Note: since the blocks are not compacted, they can be used immediately in an emergency without drying first. However, they must never come into contact with water. |
