A site concrete batching plant, also known as a mobile concrete batching plant, is an installation used on construction sites to produce fresh concrete. It mixes the concrete ingredients, such as cement, aggregates (sand and gravel) and water, into a homogeneous mixture ready for direct use in construction.

A site concrete batching plant generally works as follows:

Material storage: The plant has storage compartments for cement, sand, gravel and sometimes other specific additives. These materials are stored in advance for use during mixing.

Dosing: The materials required to produce concrete are measured in specific quantities according to the mix design for the desired concrete type. Hoppers and precise dosing systems measure the exact quantity of each component.

New Concrete Batching Plant Prices
Concrete batching plant models
Concrete batching plants fall into two categories: dragline scraper plants and compact plants. Both systems share the same basic components:
• Cement silo
Plants have one or more cement silos, generally containing cement but also capable of holding powdered additions such as fly ash. Capacity is stated in tonnes and averages 50 tonnes, equivalent to 37 m³. Supplies arrive by truck. A pump on the truck pushes cement into the silo from below. At the top of the silo is an opening with a filter that allows air through while retaining cement dust. This filter is currently mandatory. Basic cleaning is performed after each filling, either by vibration or by injecting compressed air.
Two mixer types are currently available: – The planetary mixer is the most efficient but also the most expensive. It consists of a pan topped by a lid supporting the mixing blades. The pan walls and floor are lined with Hardox plates, a highly abrasion-resistant metal. The motor is mounted vertically on the lid. Some models have an automatic cleaning system with adjustable water nozzles. Unfortunately, this system does not provide complete cleaning, so manual finishing is still necessary. – The drum mixer is the least expensive mixing system and has lower output than a planetary mixer. Its mixing quality is also slightly lower, although still acceptable. It consists of a drum rotating around a horizontal axis. Concrete is mixed in one direction of rotation, and the drum is emptied by reversing its rotation. Average capacity is 1 m³ for both systems.
• Weighing system
Each ingredient added to the concrete is weighed separately. Weighing can take place at different points depending on the plant brand.
• Mixing water
The plant connects directly to the water mains through a 1½-inch (45 mm) connection. Water quantities are controlled automatically. Clean water is very important to avoid damaging the equipment. All plants have a pressure reducer to obtain approximately 4 bar, depending on the manufacturer. They also have a meter for water billing.
• Admixture container
Liquid admixtures are stored near the plant in insulated containers equipped with heaters for cold periods. Pipes connect these containers to the plant, and a drum pump transfers the liquids. Two dosing systems are available. The more precise volumetric method pumps the admixture and then measures its volume, while the timed method allows a set flow rate for a specified period.
• Intermediate storage hopper
Depending on requirements, an intermediate storage hopper holding two batches can be installed. It has a system that prevents the concrete from setting and temporarily stores concrete before it is discharged into the bucket.
• Guide frame
This guides the crane bucket while concrete is loaded. The production process is now generally controlled automatically by a computer system. Plants are highly modular, allowing components to be added or removed according to each company’s needs. The main difference between the two systems concerns aggregate supply and storage. Dragline scraper plants: This system requires aggregates to be stored directly on the ground beside the plant. A dragline scraper retrieves them and feeds them into production. This arrangement has several advantages, the greatest being a price substantially below that of a compact plant. It costs approximately half as much as an equivalent compact version. The difference is explained by the gravel silo, which costs as much as the rest of the plant. Transport costs are also lower because there is no gravel silo to move. Assembly time is reduced by around one day. A machine is needed to reshape and recenter the aggregate piles, adding to site costs. Compact plants: Aggregates are stored in a heated silo with one to four separate compartments. Heating elements keep the aggregates frost-free; they do not dry them. Trucks deliver the aggregates and discharge them into a bucket beside the silo. Once full, the bucket is winched to the top and emptied into the silo. Average silo capacity is approximately 70 m³, plus around 10 m³ in the loading bucket. Aggregates that fall beneath the bucket occasionally need to be cleared away. These plants provide the highest output because aggregates can be replenished during production and are supplied in optimum condition. Average output is around 40 m³/h. Compact plants require less width, approximately 4 to 5 m, whereas a dragline scraper plant needs 14 to 16 m. Compact plants are also around 4 m shorter. However, they are taller because of the aggregate silo. Their electricity consumption is higher because of the silo’s operation and heating.
- Transport: Transporting a compact plant is demanding because the aggregate silo requires an oversized load convoy. Remember to coordinate this transport with the police. All other equipment can be carried on a standard low-loader trailer. Allow one load for each cement silo, one for the dismantled chassis and one final load for the remaining equipment, such as ladders and the guide frame.
- Assembly: The plant is assembled using a truck crane, generally rated at 20 to 30 tonnes, to position the aggregate silo. Main assembly takes one day, followed by another day for finishing work. Three days of testing and commissioning are added to these two days. Two people are needed: a supplier’s specialist and a worker from the company.
- Adjustments: During the three commissioning days, moving components such as cables, bearings and motors are checked, and the cement filter is thoroughly cleaned. The scales are calibrated because transport may have affected their settings. The supplier or plant operator enters the concrete mix designs needed for the site into the computer system. Finally, a trial concrete batch is produced and tested by a laboratory.
- Dismantling: A truck crane is also required for the same reasons as during assembly. Dismantling takes two days. On the first day, cables, electrical connections and the water mains connection are disconnected. The installation itself is dismantled the following day. Two people are again required.
- Mix designs: Site plants can produce a wide range of mixes provided they contain only a limited number of additions and admixtures. Both pumpable and high-strength concrete can be produced. However, composition accuracy is lower than at a stationary plant. Testing a new mix before production is strongly recommended because mix design is very complex and varies with many parameters.
